Zirconia vs porcelain-fused-to-metal: which is better for fixed teeth?
When both options are suitable and made to the same standard, zirconia generally offers an aesthetic advantage and no metal framework. But a well-made PFM restoration can be better than cheap zirconia produced poorly.

“Zirconia” does not describe the whole quality
Different zirconias exist, and the workflow also matters. Design, thickness, milling, sintering, finishing and laboratory control influence the final result.
Two quotes that both say “zirconia” may not be offering the same product.
PFM can still be a good solution
PFM uses a metal framework covered with ceramic and has been used successfully for many years. When designed and made well, it can be strong, precise and durable.
A lower price does not automatically mean poor quality.

When both are made well, zirconia offers real advantages
When both options are appropriate and made to the same level, zirconia offers no metal framework, high biocompatibility and often a better aesthetic potential in visible areas.
Two zirconia restorations can have very different quality and prices
Do not compare only “zirconia €140” with “zirconia €180”. Ask which zirconia, which laboratory, how many try-ins and how the restoration is designed and finished.
Good PFM can be better than bad zirconia
Cheap zirconia may cost less because the material, laboratory, milling process, try-ins or finishing are different.
The word “zirconia” does not automatically make the restoration better. With a limited budget, excellent PFM can be more sensible than poorly made zirconia.
How to choose with a real budget
If both are well made and the budget allows it, zirconia is often attractive for aesthetics and metal-free construction.
If you are choosing between uncertain low-cost zirconia and high-quality PFM from a reliable laboratory, compare the complete work rather than the label.
So: zirconia or porcelain-fused-to-metal?
If both options are suitable and made to the same standard, zirconia generally offers the advantage of a metal-free structure and very attractive aesthetics. But the material name does not replace quality: well-made porcelain-fused-to-metal is preferable to poorly designed or processed zirconia.

You can request an assessment even if you do not yet have scans or quotes. If you are starting from zero, we tell you which information is useful to begin with. If you have two quotes, we can help you compare material, laboratory, components, planned try-ins and what is actually included in the price.
