Dental tourism in Albania: figures, clinics, travel and what to know before you go
Albania is no longer a niche destination for dental care. Tens of thousands of foreign patients arrive every year, especially from Italy, while Tirana now has a very large clinic and service market. The question is no longer only “how much does it cost?”, but how to choose well inside a crowded market.
Dental tourism in Albania is often reduced to price. In reality, frequent European flights, private clinics, agencies, consultants, laboratories and organised packages have created a real market. That makes the trip easier, but it also makes choosing the right provider more important.
How large is it really?
There is no national register counting every dental tourist by nationality. But several solid figures show the scale of the market and the European demand behind it.
INSTAT “arrivals” are border entries, not unique individuals. The ~50,000 Italian figure is a SIdP estimate of dental tourism, not an Albanian administrative census.
Italy dominates dental tourism, but the wider pool is European.
For dental care, Italy is by far the main source market. In an industry report, operators said more than 80% of their foreign clients came from Italy. The UK, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Greece, the US and Nordic countries are also reported, but no official national country-by-country count exists for dental patients alone.
The useful distinction
Albania already receives millions of European visitors and has far broader air connectivity than a few years ago. Dental tourism has grown inside that trend.
Country-specific dental figures remain limited. General tourism statistics should not be presented as dental-patient counts.
More clinics means more choice. It does not automatically mean more quality.
About 1,300 dental clinics were reported as operating in Albania in 2024. A growing share works with international patients, often with multilingual staff, transfers, hotels, call centres and social-media marketing.
Offers that look similar can differ substantially in diagnosis, implant system, components, laboratory, team experience, biological timing, warranty and aftercare.
In 2025, Albania’s State Health Inspectorate carried out 1,206 inspections and re-inspections of dental practices and laboratories, with fines, urgent measures and warnings in some cases. That does not make the whole market unsafe; it shows that standards are not identical across such a large sector.
Flights, hotel and transfers: what is really included?
Many offers for international patients are sold as packages. Hotel and airport-to-clinic transfers are common; some offers also include flights, sightseeing or local assistance. The exact formula varies by provider.

Convenient logistics should never compress clinical timing. Define treatment first, then organise travel around medical needs.
If you have free time, the trip can also be a chance to see the city.
Many patients stay in Tirana for several days. When treatment allows, there are plenty of easy things to do without complicated travel.
In a market full of offers, compare more than price.
If two quotations differ by a few hundred euros, the useful comparison is what sits behind the total.
